Southern Stitches Bullion Tutorial
Bullions are one of my favorite stitches to make! Often times, many people seem to have a little trouble making them, so I decided to put together this tutorial of the way I make mine, which hopefully will be easy to understand and help you create your own beautiful bullions!
We will begin with a simple bullion knot:
This stitch is also nice used as a tiny bud.
Take needle thru one pleat
Wrap needle 8 times clockwise
Using thumb & index finger hold the wrapped thread between your fingers keeping all the wraps tight together. Using your other hand, grap the needle and start pulling it up, while you are still holding the wraps with your left hand. Do not let go of the wraps until the needle is all the way pulled thru.
Bring Needle up thru top of a pleat
Using your thumb and index finger with your left hand and gently tug the thread with your right hand until the wraps all sit neatly together. Take your needle down to back side of fabric and tie off.
When you let go, all the wraps should look like this.
Bullion Bud Instructions:
Hold wraps with thumb and index fingers of left hand, as your right hand gently pulls the needle thru the wraps. Bullions will go from left side to right, then bring needle to the back of fabric and tie off. Your bullion should look like this.
Make 8 wraps, bringing wraps close together
Bring needle up to left side of pleat.
Take needle thru 2 pleats
Begin wrapping thread clockwise around the needle
Bring bullion over to the right side and needle to the back of fabric.
Choose a lighter shade of thread, Bring needle up the left side of the next pleat.
Bring needle back up to the left side of the pleat, then bite thru 4 pleats as shown.
Start wrapping clockwise. Increase wraps to 12. Once again, using your thumb and index finger of your left hand, hold the wraps in place, as your right hand gently pulls the thread thru the wraps.
Take needle thru 4 pleats starting at the far right thru to the far left.
Wrap 12 times clockwise. Once again hold wraps as instructed and gently pull thread thru.
Completed Bullion Bud!
Bring bullion across to the other side, then needle to back and tie off.
Add lazy daisy stitches on either side, above or below, or above on one corner and below on the other to make a beautiful completed bullion bud!
Bullion Rose Instructions:
Begin with two 2-pleat 8-wrap bullions in a darker color.
Using a lighter shade, bring needle up on the next pleat to the left of the 2 bullions. Next bring the needle up diagonally, as shown and begin wrapping. Wrap 12 times clockwise.
Bring bullion across 3 pleats and needle to back of fabric.
Completed Bullion Rose!
The next 4 pictures show how you will work your way around the center 2 bullions (bud) to create your rose. You will want to turn your fabric as you work around the rose. Each time you will wrap 12 times clockwise, then bring the thread to the back, before starting on another petal. The rose can be any size you want by increasing the petals around. I just made one ring around my main two starting bullions (bud), but I could start another round - when you do that, you will increase the amount of petals. For instance, I have 5 petals around my bullion rose, if I decided to go around again, my next round might have 7 or 8 petals.
